Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Is It Safe To Continue With Xanax For ADD During Pregnancy?
Hello, I am 7 weeks pregnant and I normally take Adderall for ADD and xanax for panic disorders and anxiety. I have been told that the adderall is fine to the during pregnancy and the xanax is my choice because of the 10% risk factor with xanax in pregnancy. I haven t been able to see my OB yet because of my insurance situation. What should I do?
Xanax (alprazolam) belongs to pregnancy category D (can have effect on fetus but can be continued if necessary when safer alternatives not available).
It will be fine if we can withhold or replace this drug, at least for first 3 months, if possible. Depending on your symptoms, your psychiatrist will be the apt person to do this adjustment.
Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Muhammed Aslam T. K., Pediatrician
