Is It Safe To Dissolve Trokendi XR In Orange Juice For An Autistic And Seizures Patient?
My 30 year old son is autistic and has seizures. He has been on Topamax for quite a few years with no side affects. Right now Kurtis is taking 125 mg in the morning and 250 mg at bedtime. Our Neurologist just prescribed Trokendi XR, 200 mg in the morning and 200 mg at bedtime. The problem is that our Son cannot swallow pills and we have always dissolved his meds in orange juice. The Trokendi says not to chew, dissolve, etc. (although a couple others he takes also say not to). Haven t started it yet and do not intend to until we can talk to his Doctor just wanted your opinion on if it safe to dissolve.
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
It is clearly not advisable to alter the capsule in any way before swallowing whole. Dissolving can cause unpredictable serum plasma concentrations resulting in toxic levels of medication designed to be time released. You also did not explain the rationale for switching to Trokendi. It doesn't sound like your son is having any seizure control problems with the Topiramate he's on AND he could have the option of sprinkle tablets with that drug. So why the switch to a drug he really can't comfortably take unless the capsule's altered which is not advisable?
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
