..I have a perforated ear drum. It has been perforated for nearly 3 weeks now. I am supposed to be flying to America in 2 weeks. I know you can fly with a perforated ear drum, but what about an ear drum that is just healing? If I have to be careful when I am blowing my nose, what will the changes in air pressure potentially do? My ear already constantly feels like I am on an airplane anyway!
Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
When you have a perforated eardrum, the air pressure in your middle ear can balance out more easily with the pressure of the surrounding air, as the air is able to pass through the hole. This means flying with a perforated eardrum may actually cause less discomfort than usual. But anyway avoid if possible otherwise use nasal spray with chewing gum useful. If symptoms not improved please consult your ENT specialist he will examine and treat you accordingly but lator you may need tympanic membrane repair surgery.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
