Is It Safe To Give Romilast For Wheezing And Breathlessness In Children?
hi doctor, My son is 11 years old and he has continuous problem of wheezing and breathing problem specifically when he take milk / cold drinks and also packed chips or any of packed fruit juices. and our pediatric normally prescribe him to have romilast for at least 3 -4 months pls. tell to this medicine contain any steroid
Wheezing is caused due to broncho-constriction (obstruction of smaller airway passages) which is indicative of Hyper-responsiveness and associated inflammation of air passages.
Romilast (pharmacologically Montelukast) is used as a maintenance therapy to relieve symptoms of seasonal allergies & asthma. It does not contain any steroid. However, as your son is having an acute attack of wheeze, Romilast will not be helpful. Under such conditions, relief will be obtained with a bronchodilator which provide symptomatic relief by causing broncho-dilation (dilating the smaller airway passages, relieving the obstruction & increasing airflow to lungs).
So, kindly consult his treating Doctor/ Pulmonologist and discuss regarding the same. Investigations like X ray of the chest and PFT (pulmonary function test) will be helpful in detecting any pathology in the respiratory tract & lungs.
Wishing your son a good health. Take care.
