Hi Dr. Mintz. I found out that I have pin worms. I told my doctor and she prescribed me albenza. The thing is, I am pregnant 28 weeks. Is it safe to use this medicine? Can pin worms go through placenta and harm the fetus. What is the risk of having pin worms for a baby? Is it better to wait and treat it later after the delivery or better to take Albezna?
Albenza can be given during pregnancy and it comes in category C. Most of the time it has no effect on fetus. you have 28 week of gestation so it is relatively safe.
Usually it is used as single dose so no need to worry about its effect on fetus.
There is no risk of pin worm for a baby and it is not cross placenta so baby is safe.
You can take it now without any hesitations.
Thank you.
Still have a query then feel free to ask.
Happy to help you.
Have a healthy life ahead.
Take care.
