Is It Safe To Swim In A Child Suffering From Avascular Necrosis In Hip?

We were just told my 5 year-old grandson has avascular necrosis in the hip, He is awaiting an appointment with a pediatric orthopedist but in the meantime is scheduled to start two weeks of swim lessons in two days. He was also scheduled for soccer camp which we know is out but what about the swim lessons. Will they hurt him?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
I appreciate your concern for your grandson.
You have mentioned that your child is diagnosed with avascular necrosis of the hip. In this disease, the blood supply to the head of femur, the bony portion which forms joint with hip bone is not getting enough blood supply and so its getting necrosed.
As swimming and soccer class both will involve many movements at the hip joint, my advice is to postpone it for few days. First visit your orthopedic, let him examine the child and analysis his current situation and decide the possible method of management. With his advice you can proceed further.
Hope this will help you.
