Is It Safe To Take Amoxicillin For UTI In An Elderly Person?
My mother patient aged 78 years suffering from Urinary Tract Infection (E. Coli) is showing Amoxicillin is Resistant but Amoxicillin/Clavulanic Acid is Sensitive. Should the patient be administered (amoxicillin 500+ clav 125) 12 hourly(b.i.d) or (amoxicillin 250+ clav 125) 8 hourly(t.i.d) ? In this case do amoxicillin (in combination with clav) has any role to play against E.Coli? Or Clav (in combination with amoxicillin) has the role to fight against E.Coli? Please explain in details. Fluoroquinolones and cephalosporins are resistant.
Hi, Thanks for posting in HCM. Since the culture and sensitivity report for urinary tract infection shows favoring report towards Amoxicillin and Clavulenic acid, it would be better to administer this combination antibiotic for treatment. Also, since fluoroquinolones and cephalosporins are indicating resistant, it is useless administering them. It is better to go for Amoxacillin 500mg with Clavulanate 125mg combination 12th hourly for 5 days (may be extended for 7 days in case the response is slow). In the meantime, plenty of liquids needs to be taken, particularly citrus fruit juices. Hope the information provided would be useful. All the best.
