My 92 year old mum has been suffering from severe cramp in her legs and has now been prescribed 0.5mg of Clonazepam. She suffers each morning when she gets out of bed but gradually during the day she gets releif. Is this the right mediation as I have read of it's side effects?

Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries

I can understand your concern. Severe cramping in legs in night during sleep could occur due to restless leg syndrome and this needs proper evaluation. Clonazepam can help to reduce the cramping but as she is 92 years old so the doses should be reduced. Clonazepam is safe drug but in elderly it might increase the risk of falls in night and this increases the risk of accidental injuries. If clonazepam results in poor relief then medicines like Pramipaxol can help. Please consult a good psychiatrist for proper treatment.

Thanks, Hope this helps you. Take care
