Is It Safe To Take Dayquil Cold & Flu With Clonazepam And Divalproex?
Hello Dr. Rynne. I am a Veteran with PTSD on clonazepam and divalproex. I also take simvastatin for cholesterol control. Presently I have a low grade fever with cough, sneezing, and lots of congestion and mucus. Is it OK to take Dayquil Cold & Flu with these meds? Thank you
It is not safe to take Dayquil Cold & Flu with Clonazepam and Divalproex. Dayquil Cold and Flu Relief contains three important ingredients in it (acetaminophen, dextromethorphan, and phenylephrine). Both clonazepam and divalproex may interact with Dextrometharpan to increase the side effects such as dizziness, drowsiness, confusion, and difficulty, impaired thinking and concentration and motor incoordination which may result in falls and its consequences.
You should avoid taking Dayquil Cold and Flu while being treated with Clonazepam and Divalproex. Also avoid activities requiring mental alertness such as driving or swimming. I advise you to consult your doctor for an alternative but a safer medicine for your low grade fever, cough, sneezing and sputum.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
