Is It Safe To Take Doxycycline For The Treatment Of Severe Itchy Rashes?

I have a severe case of hives and it has been going on for 5 days. I believe it to be caused by the Amoxicillin tablets that my dentist prescribed f or a suspected infection in my jaw, probably from a implant failure. The itching is so bad and benedryl and topical aloe vera lotion are not helping. I went to an urgent care doctor on Sunday. He prescribed doxycycline for relief from the itching. I am reluctant to take it for fear it will compound the problem. I read a number of reports of the side effects, and am very uneasy that it will make things even worse. What is your opinion?

Hi,

Doxycycline, an antibiotic is commonly prescribed for periodontitis. It has not been prescribed to relieve itching. However, Doxycycline can cause skin rash and hypersensitivity reactions (eg, urticaria).

Once offending drug Amoxicillin is withdrawn, its side effects also should disappear over a period of 2-3 days.

Instead of Benadryl (Diphenhydramine), Levocetirizine can be used for relief of itching.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
