Is It Safe To Take Duvadilan During Pregnancy?

Hi, i am in my 15th week of my first pregnancy and I was recently diagnosed with a protruding submucous myoma which causes irregular bleeding and it seems my cervix is starting to open. I was prescribed Duvadilan, although I have no cramping or pain. Wanted to ask how safe it is to use this drug and what it actually is? What side effects does it have on the baby and on me? Looking forward to your reply and thank you in advance.

OBGYN 's  Response
Hello, and I hope I can help you today.

As an OBGYN in the United States, I am unfamiliar with the use of Duvadilan during pregnancy as it has no approved uses in the U.S. in humans. It is a medicine that is used in both humans and horses to dilate blood vessels. There is no safety data or medical evidence that Duvadilan works for treatment of any conditions of pregnancy. So at least in the U.S., its use is not recommended.

I, however, am most concerned about your diagnosis- of an aborting submucous myoma during pregnancy and what its prognosis might be. Fibroids can grow very large during pregnancy, and if this one is already dilating your cervix it is highly likely that it may cause you to bleed extremely heavily as your pregnancy develops, and possibly hemorrhage to the point that you can lose your uterus and the pregnancy (I have seen a case report of that in the literature though it is not recent). There is technology to possibly treat this fibroid non-invasively in specialized centers in the U.S. with a technique called fibroid embolization, which would require an MRI of your uterus at the least and consultation with a high risk OB, interventional radiologist, and possibly a gynecologic surgeon. I would refer you for this evaluation if you were my patient with the same condition.

So I STRONGLY encourage to get a second opinion of your condition at a university medical center if that is available to you, or at least consult with a high-risk obstetrician. The Duvadilan is the least concern for me at this point, but I would not recommend it. Your condition, if this diagnosis is accurate, is potentially dangerous to both you and your baby, and is a very high-risk situation. I hope you are able to get the medical care that you need... this would be a complicated case to manage even with all healthcare resources available to you.

I wish you the best of luck in your pregnancy and I hope your advice was helpful.

Sincerely, DR. Brown
