Is It Safe To Take Gupisone During Lactation?

My doctor prescribed GUPISONE 10 for dry cough (which is continuing for last one month) along with cetirizine tablets and cough syrup.. I am 165 cm tall and weigh 72 kg. I have a 8 months old baby who is breastfeeding. Dosage prescribed is 2 tablets for 3 days and 1 tablet after that for 2 days. Is it safe to take GUPISONE during breast feeding?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

It may be taken safely while breast feeding. Gupisone is a steroid commonly prescribed to treat allergic bronchitis. Although steroids are excreted in small amounts in breast milk however doses of up to 40 mg daily of Gupisone are unlikely to cause any harmful effects in the infant.

Infants of mothers taking higher doses than this may have a degree of adrenal suppression. Monitoring of the infant for adrenal suppression is advised.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
