Is It Safe To Take Metformin Without Having A Test For Diabetes?

I went to the doctor today and the doctor said I need to take one metformin pill per day due to being pre-diabetic. I was told several years ago that I was hyglycemic and would never be a diabetic. I feel great. Shouldn t I track my sugar level before taking a pills?

Hello
I have gone through your question and understand your concern. Take up test for HbA 1 C for better understanding the blood glucose levels. Pre- diabetic state can be easily controlled with lifestyle modifications.
If the test result shows diabetic results, start metformin as prescribed. If the test results shows pre-diabetic state make lifestyle modifications like avoiding sugar, reducing carbohydrate and fat rich diet, follow a healthy diet, physical activity of a minimum of 30 minutes a day. Add foods like brown rice, quinoa, whole grains, pulses, low fat dairy, fresh fruits and vegetables to reduce blood glucose spikes in body.
Good luck. Hope your concern is answered. Thank you.
