Is It Safe To Take Norethindrone While On Mirena IUD?

I have been experiencing what feels like hormonal imbalance (mood swings, breast pain, acne) within the last 3 months. I had Mirena IUD inserted about 8 months ago. After ruling out any cysts and tumors from a diagnositc mammogram, my doctor suggested supplementing with Norethindrone pill. Is this a common practice with Mirena, or should I consider its removal. The whole point of it was the convenience of not taking a pill everyday.

Hi,

Mirena is a levonorgestrel releasing intrauterine device or IUD that is used for long term birth control and in the treatment of heavy bleeding. On the other hand, Norethindrone is a form of progesterone, a natural female sex hormone that is used in the prevention of unwanted pregnancies from unprotected sexual intercourses.
Usually if you are on Mirena IUD, then you don't additional oral contraceptive pills like Norethindrone, as Mirena IUD more than 99% effective at preventing unwanted pregnancies from unprotected sexual intercourses. Again taking Norethindrone while you are on Mirena IUD, isn't going to make Norethindrone more effective. But, if your prescribing doctor advice you to take Norethindrone while you are on Mirena IUD, then you can use both contraceptive methods. If you have any doubt, then you can ask your prescribing doctor.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Hello,

You are experiencing mood swings, breast pain, acne, etc., since 3 months. You are on Mirena IUD. You are suffering from the side effects of Mirena IUD, it commonly causes breast and back pain, acne, low mood, mood swings. Severe symptoms may be headache, migraine, heavy bleeding, abdominal or pelvic pain, scanty or no periods, etc.

The side effects vary from person to person and symptoms may get better in 3-6 months. You can wait for some time as you continue to take the medicine prescribed by your treating doctor. You should feel better. If you are still uncomfortable, you can consider removal of the IUD. After removal you may have bleeding and cramping. Stay away from addictions if any.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
