Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
May I substitute Omeprazole for Rabeprazole/Aciphex? I am running out of Aciphex in four days and would like to use some Omeprazole I have on hand until I can get another prescription. Thank you. I apologize. I did not know there was a charge. Please disregard the question.
In my opinion, you may take omeprazole in place of rabeprazole, as there is not much difference in their effectiveness and tolerance. In controlled studies, it has been shown, that both the drugs are well tolerated by the patients in most cases.
Though, there is some subjective superiority with Rabeprazole over Omeprazole in relation to symptomatic feeling of relief in patients particularly symptom of heart burn. However, endoscopic improvement after 3 weeks and after 6 weeks is almost same in both the categories as regards to signs of corrosive gastritis in case of patients of GERD. Also, the relapse rate is also almost same (about 4-5%) with both the type of PPI.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Satnarain Bansal, General & Family Physician
