Is It Safe To Take Oxycontin After Taking An Extra Dosage Of Ciprofloxacin?

Hi. I just started on ciprofloxacin. Hal 500 mg tonight.. I took one about 5 hours ago, then ate dinner and then picked it up by mistake instead of taking another metronidazole. Since I don t have much of the citro in my system is this dangerous? Should I watch for any additional side effects? Also i am due for a 10 mg OxyContin, will this cause any problems to go ahead and take? Thank you

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

It is not safe to take oxycontin while on ciprofloxacin. Taking an extra dose of ciproflox generally does not cause much problem however you may experience nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, joint pains or itching.

If oxycontin is taken while on ciprofloxacin, it may increase the levels of oxycodone. This may cause drowsiness, dizziness, lightheadedness, difficulty concentrating, and impairment in thinking and judgment.

In its severe form, low blood pressure, respiratory distress, fainting, coma, or even death may occur. Ask your doctor to prescribe alternatives that do not interact, or you may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring to safely use both medications.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
