Is It Safe To Take Sertraline Instead Of Fluxetine For Depression?

Hello doctor,I started having my second episode of depression towards the end of 2012 , my first depressive/prodomal sign of psychosis episode was in 2011. I ve taken my medication since 2012 , which was fluoxetine and risperidone and I have only changed flouxetine because I felt that it was not making me feel better but that was due to my negligence , I am now taking sertraline . My point is that from late 2013 to almost the whole year of 2014 , I was taking risperidone (night time) a day after the day I was supposed to take it ( midnight) and this cycle had a devastating effect on my mental health and I feel as if my thinking is blunt and slow , most of the time it s like I am cog blocked but I have the urge to talk at any given moment even though my opinion or topic is not really important . I just want to know that based on what i have just told you what kind of illness might I be experiencing ?.

Hi,

Based on the information provided, it is difficult to determine what specific mental health condition you may be experiencing. In terms of switching from fluoxetine to sertraline, it is generally safe to switch between different types of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) like these medications for depression. However, it is important to follow your healthcare provider's instructions and guidance for switching between medications.

Regarding your concerns about the effect of taking risperidone at the wrong time, it is possible that this could have contributed to cognitive symptoms. However, it is also important to consider other factors that may be contributing to your symptoms, such as medication side effects, other health conditions, or environmental factors.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
