Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
i have factor v leiden and an ob/gyn specialist just prescribed visanne for 3 months to treat endometriosis but i see that it is not suggested for people with the FVL. i am 37, non smoker, have not had clots, 2 normal pregnancies/live births. he is aware of the FVL and said it shouldn t be a problem.
FVL increases risk of blood clots as do all OCP's. The risk is small, but certainly increased with every additional risk factor added (smoking, obesity, medications).
Most people who have Leiden do not develop clots. Ever. In heart disease, those who've had problems are well over 10 fold more likely to have more of them than those who don't. This is leading to recommending to NOT worry and NOT take statins in those who do NOT have a history of problems, since not everyone with a genetic predisposition to heart disease (high cholesterol) gets it. I can see where your doctor is coming from. Most doctors try for ZERO increased risk and recommend against ANY action that increases it. This usually increases risks (from other things. Lots of Mammograms, increased radiation exposure and increased risk of NON-breast cancers).
