Is It Safe To Use Erythromycin Ointment For Redness And Swelling On Sclera?

My husband believes the cat scratched his sclera this morning when she jumped on his head . I had him flush with cool H2o and ice to site. Redness and swelling went down ,no drainage,no c/o pain ,just irritating. Sclera is bumpy looking .I think ER and tobramyacin or erythromycin ointment ?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Based on the history your husband seems to have developed corneal abrasion apparently caused by the cat scratch.

Most corneal abrasions heal in 24 to 72 hours and less likely to cause infection however, erythromycin eye ointment may be used to prevent the infection.

An ophthalmologist should be consulted if he develops photophobia, painful movements of the eye ball, blurred vision, excessive tearing of headache.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
