General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
HI, Melalite has hydroquinone- This can get absorbed through skin & has been reported to cause adverse effects on fetus/breast fed infants-so It has been put n category C for pregnant women. I would suggest you to avoid use of the melalite creame, till you finish breast feeding. Dark skin can be taken care of by- using natural bleaching agent like-cucumber and lemon juice/potato starch/ fresh creme and turmeric pack/yogert etc. make up. Thanks. .
The drug in melalite is hydroquinone. There are no human or animal studies that report the effects of this drug on the baby. Hence we do not know the effects on the baby. If the use is absolutely indicate that is the benefit is more than the risk, then only its use is advised.
Other drug is tretinoin: this is a drug known to have bad effects on the baby even if used topically. It is advisable to stop it several days before getting pregnant and is contraindicated in pregnancy.
I hope this helped. Thanks for using HCM. I am here for any more queries. Dr Madhuri Bagde Consultant Ob Gynec.
