While your tattoo artist may be able to easily tell what an infected tattoo looks like, know that they are not medically trained, usually, so it would be best to make an appointment with your doctor or visit your nearest emergency room. 2.Usually, a doctor will prescribe or suggest topical ointments like A&D ointment, Hydrocortisone cream or an over the counter antibiotic ointment. Only use these ointments if you know the tattoo to be infected. Over use of them can result in irritated skin which can possibly lead to infection. 3.Keep the tattoo dry at all times.
