Is It Sufficient For The Child To Take Meropenem IV For Typhoid For 11 Days Instead Of 14 Days As Prescribed By The Doctor?

Hello Doctors,
My son (2 year and 6 month old) got diagnosed for typhoid, doctors suggested Meropenem IV for 14 days my question is what if he gets 11 days instead of 14 days , the reason why I want to discuss because, he got 6 cannula changed in last two weeks. I think again he needs one more to finish 14 days of medication.

Hi,
Thanks for writing in.
Meropenem is not the antibiotic of choice for typhoid in the first place.
IV antibiotics are continued until the patient remains afebrile for a period of at least 48 hours. Thereafter the patient needs to be converted to oral form. However the said antibiotic does not have a oral form. As a result the patient will need to be converted to ciprofloxacin.
I hope this answers your doubt.
Regards
