Is Kidney Disease Possible When On Antibiotics For Prostatitis?

I have been having prostratitis symptoms on and off now for several months. Had a urine sample done in February this yr which showed no casts in urine and no bacteria but was given ciproflexen for 4 weeks. Again in April prostratitis pain back, urine sample tested, no bacteria was found but the sample showed casts at number 5. Was given different antibiotic (second line). Had a follow up urine sample done 8th June which showed casts - 3. Both times red and white cells ok. The number has gone down. Dr couldn t tell me type of cast and is sending me for a ultrasound for kidneys. I don t have any symptoms of kidney disease, I am 24. I do lift weights and take mass building protein shakes couple times a week. Could this have caused casts. I am really scared I have Kidney disease. I have been on antibiotics for this prostratitis on and off for around 4 mths. Could this have caused damage. Does it always mean kidney disease. As the cast number is less this time, should I worry.

Hi,

Ciprofloxacin is an antibiotic with wide coverage. In therapeutic doses, there is no much damage to kidney. But, it is not proven that the dose plays a role in causing kidney damage. Acute tubular necrosis is the common condition following quinolone ingestion. In Ciprofloxacin overdose, there is high chance of kidney injury. When it is taken with other nephrotoxic drugs, the chance for tubular necrosis is high.

Most of the time, it form crystals with magnesium and protein. High protein diet itself damage the glomerulus of the kidney which causes chronic kidney disease. It is found that the kidney damage is reversible on withdrawal of the drug causing injury. Discuss with the dietitian for appropriate diet for workouts without damaging the kidneys. Take plenty of liquids to avoid kidney damage. Discuss with the nephrologist regarding the continuation of Ciprofloxacin.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
