Is Knee Replacement Advisable For An Overweight Person?
I have had an MRI and Dr Barnett with Scott & White Temple has confirmed I need knee replacement surgery. His only concern is my age(50) and I m over weight. So I need to get it done. How do I find the knee surgeon I want the best if I m going to do it. Thanks Mike
Knee joint is one of the major weight bearing joint in the body. It is more commonly damaged in old age and obese individuals due to increased wear and tear and more stress over the joint. The arthritis is found in most of the individuals due to increased rate of obesity among the population. Knee replacement surgery is the replacement of the damaged cartilage along with the piece of bone with the metal implants. Depends on the level of damage of the cartilage and bone, there may be minor change in the procedure. Metal grade plastic spacer is placed between the femoral component and the tibial component of the prosthesis.
Overweight and obesity are not the contraindication for surgery. Recent studies show significant improvement in the mobility and morbidity status in obese individuals compared to the lean individuals. Visit the orthopedist for further opinion.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
