Is Leaking Fluid From Scratched Area On Leg A Cause For Concern?
My 95 year mother has scratched her leg and clear fluid is leaking from the scratch. She has had swollen legs and a hip operation but is reasonably active and has also been having other small wounds on her lower leg dressed every two or three days. The leak is not painful and is slowing down and her leg is now a lot thinner. Should we be worried?
Hello, Welcome to HCM. I understand your concern. This is serous discharge due to excessive scratching. There is nothing to worry about. You should apply antibiotic ointment locally till it is healed as your mother is old age and there is chance of infection locally. It is also important to relieve itching as repeated scratching may lead eczema which may be difficult to heal. She may apply steroid ointment if itching is due to scabbing of wounds. She may use a good moisturized if itching is due to dry skin. Hope this will be helpful. Do ask if any further question is there. Take care.
