Is Left Mild Pelviectasis Noted In An Ultrasound Scan Something Of Concern?

Hello (22 yr old, female) I recently got an abdominal ultrasound and the results were as follow: Horseshoe Kidney noted, Left mild pelviectasis. The doctor told me to not worry about and that they will just monitor it and I will receive another ultrasound in 3 months. She did not mention if there was any obstruction or anything, all she said to not worry about it. Despite that, I am feeling worried because I do not know as to why I got this. Should I just not worry about it or keep pushing for more tests, or look for a specialist.

Pathologist and Microbiologist 's  Response
Hello,

Horse shoe kidney is a congenital anomaly and is present by birth. Since, the horse shoe kidney did not cause any problem till date thus, it was not detected till yet. Horse shoe shaped kidney had led to stasis or collection of urine in pelvis which can lead to infection and / or compression of kidney tissue leading to hydronephrosis. Thus, I suggest you to stay in contact with your nephrologist for management of stasis and hydronephrosis.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shailja Puri, Pathologist and Microbiologist
