Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have recently been discharged from hospital with kidney stones which passed through naturally. I have been given paracetamol, codeine, extra strong ibuprofen and omeprazole. Feeling really light headed and sick could this be because of the codeine?? I have recently started my period aswell which causes me lots of pain. Should I stop taking the codeine? Is there anything else I can do?
Hi & Welcome. You seem to be suffering from dysmenorrhea. Codeine is unlikely to cause light headedness and a feeling of sickness. Since, the kidney stones have already passed naturally, there is no need to take Codeine. If there are no disturbances in your periods or if you don't have other associated symptoms such as vaginal discharge, fever, difficulties while passing urine and so on, there is no reason to worry.
As far as treating pain is concerned, I would suggest you to consult a gynecologist for physical examination. Following evaluation, he/she can prescribe you antispasmodic drug which can prevent pain. In the mean time, home measures such as hot compresses over the lower abdomen and massages can help. Over the counter non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) such as Ibuprofen or Mefenamic acid can be useful. There's nothing to worry as it is not a serious problem and will be redressed by assurance and proper treatment.
