Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
After having the vagus nerve cut during stomach and bowl surgery I have sever problems with any type of bowel stimulant makes me feel quite ill . actilax is very good but now I see long term use is a problem. apart from fibre is there an alternative to help long term.?
Hello, Welcome to HCM and thanks for your query. Actilax can produce electrolyte abnormalities on long term use as it draws fluid into the gut .This can be minimised by taking with plenty of fruits and water. The normal bowel movement may be as low as once in 3 days. So if you are satisfied with one bowel movement every 3rd day, you may take Actilax every 3rd day without much side effects. There are other osmotic laxatives like Movicol which work in a similar way. I shall be happy to answer any further questions Take care Dr Noble Zachariah
