Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Is Low Vitamin D Level In A Teenager A Cause For Concern?
Yes. My 14 year old grandson has broken multiple bones the past year. He has lost 20 lbs. He has migraines and frequent episodes of nausea and vomiting. In December 2015 he had mono and strep. He has low Vt. D levels. We are concerned it could be a serious condition. Thanks for your advice.
Low vitamin D can lead to multiple fractures and it will affect the growth as well. VitaminD and calcium supplements must be given.
We have to rule out underlying causes like endocrine problems including hyperparathyroidism must be looked for.
In most cases, it is due to nutritional deficiency and will improve once the vitamin D is supplemented through food. Adequate sun exposure is necessary for vitamin D production.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
