Hi I suffer wit HHT and unable to take oral iron due to effect on my bowels. ( I also have spina bifida) I have just had my 3rd infusion. 1st no side effects, 2nd felt like I had food poisoning and this time have pain across my lower back mainly on the left had side. Is this normal? Elaine
Based on the history you have shared, these symptoms can be due to iron supplements as even intravenous injection of iron may cause abdominal cramps etc however in presence of hereditary hemorrhagic telengactasia possibility of gastrointestinal blood loss should be ruled out. Stool for occult blood for blood loss and ultrasound abdomen may be needed for any other related pathology. Meanwhile, OTC analgesics like acetaminophen alongwith anti spasmodic like drotavarine can be helpful for symptomatic relief.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further. Wishing you a speedy recovery.
