Is Major Cramping Pain, Diarrhea And Headaches Related To The Mirena Coil?

I have had mirena for almost five years now and have not had a period or cramping in almost four years. about four days ago i started having major cramping in the abdominal area and very watery diarrhea that is so bad it wakes me up three to five times a night the past three nights. i ve been taking ibuprofen but it doesn t help with the pain. i can still feel the strings of my iud, and am not bleeding or having any discharge; just major cramping pain, diarrhea and headaches. is it related to the mirena? can it stop working early? what should i do? the pain is scaring me.

Hi,

According to your description as you are not having bleeding or vaginal discharge and able to feel the strings, the symptoms you have mentioned may not be related to Mirena.

Cramping abdominal pain, watery diarrhea and headache these are pointing more towards Gastrointestinal problem like Gastroenteritis with electrolytes imbalance. Simple analgesic may not be sufficient to treat the problem.

So, please consult your physician once, get examined. Antibiotics, probiotic powder, electrolytes replacement can help to decrease the symptoms. Usually Mirena works for 5 years, if the time of period of Mirena is over, you can consult your Gynecologist and can get it removed.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
