Is Medical Marijuana Effective In The Treatment Of Chronic Pain?

Hi, As a result of a car accident in 1986 I have been managing chronic pain. Ten yrs. after my accident I stopped taking my narcotic meds. I still take an antidepressant, Venlafaxine (150 mg.), and Tizanidine (1 mg.) as needed for muscle spasms and muscle relaxation before bedtime. I have had HBP for 28 yrs. which is controlled with Lisinopril 40mg.), and Amlodipine (5 mg.). Now I am dealing with Fibromyalgia and Insomnia. At age 72 I need to supplement my SS income for living expenses, so I still do part time consulting. The stress of managing pain and working with not much sleep has made my pain level increase. Rather then taking any more drugs I was researching medical marijuana especially for pain and sleep management. I understand that it can help depression and HPB, also. What is your view about only starting with medical marijuana for pain and sleep management first along with my regular meds? I don t know if marijuana will interact with them. I have to do something so that I can keep functioning and get the pain level down.

Hello,

Thanks for your query on HCM

"As"per your clinical history is concerned please follow like this -

1)Marijuana is not the right choice for pain control, you need a physical examination by a pain specialist and need prescribed medication for underlaying pathological conditions.

2)Do take other medications as per your doctor's advice.

Do follow few lifestyle modifications like this -

1)Try to reduce stress. Develop a plan to avoid or limit overexertion and emotional stress. Allow yourself time each day to relax. Try stress management techniques, such as deep-breathing exercises or meditation.

2)Get enough sleep. Because fatigue is one of the main characteristics of fibromyalgia, getting sufficient sleep is essential. In addition to allotting enough time for sleep, practice good sleep habits, such as going to bed and getting up at the same time each day and limiting daytime napping.

3)Try to do exercise regularly. At first, exercise may increase your pain. But doing it gradually and regularly often decreases symptoms. Appropriate exercises may include walking, swimming and water aerobics. A physical therapist can help you develop a home exercise program. Stretching, good posture and relaxation exercises also are helpful.

4)Try to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Eat healthy foods. Limit your caffeine intake. Do something that you find enjoyable and fulfilling every day.

Hope that helps
