I was recently told my EKG showed I have MVP.. I have had some of the symptoms for years.. My Brother also has it and will require surgery in the future they say.. My question is, with having some of the symptoms for years always thinking it was something else how bad could my MVP be?
Dear I can understand your concern . Most of the time patients of mitral valve prolapse are asymptomatic and remain so for entire life.but in few cases they can cause symptoms like breathlessness palpitations lightheadedness or syncope..These symptoms appear when patient develop mitral regurgitation another valvular condition.and associated ventricular structural damage causing rhythm disturbance etc..as you have mentioned your mvp was diagnosed on ecg only I an not sure about that..In my opinion echocardiography is must to diagnose it.and for your symptoms of you have symptomatic mitral valve prolapse then it's an indication of mitral valve repair . In other less severe cases you can get symptomatic benefits from beta blockers and diuretics etc..discus all these with your physician . Hope this will help.
