Is Mood Swing And Aggressive Behavior Sign Of Bipolar Disorder?
Hi there my son who is staying with us sometimes have terriable mood swings, he will walk into the house all friendly go to his room and all of a sudden when he comes out he is agressive and very rude without any reason, he also go out sometimes without telling us where he is going and only get home in the early hours and when we ask him about it he shouts at me and his dad, we were just wondering if he might have bipolar disorder, or split personality, what do you think?
Bipolar disorder generally have aggressive mood more continuous then episodic. Mood swings can be present in mixed episode of bipolar disorder. However this mixed episode consist of swings of severe high aggressive or cheerful mood and depressive mood on other side. With mood changes if his behaviour is so disturbing that it can harm himself or others and required hospitalization then it will be bipolar. So for bipolar diagnosis detail history is required.
In his case one possibility is temporal lobe epilepsy in which episode of anger is episode of seizure in actual. For that EEG and MRI brain scan needed.
So if feasible take her to psychiatrist soon for evaluation.
Hope I have answered your query. Regards, Dr.Chintan Solanki.
