Hi,I am Dr. Gopal Goel (Orthopaedic Surgeon). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have multiple myeloma and have been in remission since tandem stem cell transplants in Feb and July 2006. I have level 7-9 lower back pain and the hydrocodeine that I am taking every two hours is no longer working. The MRI on 9/10/2011 shows posterior annular fissuring present at L5/S1 AND bilateral L5 isthmic spondylolsis and minimal grade 1 anterolisthes. My oncologist is recommending morphene tabs every 12 hours.
Your MRI shows certain changes in the lower lumbar area. The pain should be managed by a variety of methods not medications only. Morphine is a drug reserved for certain pains which are unbearable and affecting the lifestyle. Other methods are pain patches which contain pain relief medications and Buprenorphine. Your doctor can also try epidural injections and facet blocks which can give good relief. Pregabalin is drug which can be prescribed for you.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. George Verghese, Orthopedic Surgeon
