Is Movement Of Knee Advisable While Wearing Braces?

Hello. I have a tibial plateau fracture from riding an atv and it tilted and braces my leg. This Happened on the 15th of May 2016 in Saint Marteen while I was on vacation. I went to the doctor and they did a ct scan and an X-ray. They gave me a full leg cast, hard back and soft front. They told me I had to do surgery as soon as I got back to the US on the 18th. I rest my leg for the remaining time. When I came back to the US I went straight to the er. I ended up staying overnight for a blood transfusion *not because of trauma*. I m anemic and iron deficient(low hemoglobin 5. Something) On the 20th of May they removed the cast and put on a splint. I was not supposed to remove it at all. I haven t seen a orthopedic as yet, I was schedule to see him on the 25th of May 2016. When I saw him, he removed the splint and gave me a knee brace where I was told I can bend my knee 90 degrees, nwb, toe touch, and can also sleep with it opened. He said I didn t require surgery but I could do it if i wanted, the difference was with surgery it was faster healing/weight bearing time. I declined. I currently use crutches to move around because I was told not to always be in bed, or bear weight. My brace should/ is only removed to take a shower. I would like to know if it is normal not to feel any pain from about the 3day after I broke it until now? Is that a sign that it is healing? Is it ok for me to have my knee in the brace 90 degrees max* bending and moving it*? Is sitting with my foot bottom on the ground weight bearing? I had to push my appointment back due to problems with my insurance.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As per my surgical experience, partial movements are advisable for knee with braces and underlying injury which is in healing phase. Total range of movements to 90 degree and beyond are not advisable at all, which may disrupt internal recovery as well.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
