Is Nerve Block Recommended During Hip Arthroscopic Surgery?

hello! I am getting hip arthroscopic surgery in 2 weeks, and the doctor said he will be using a nerve block. I m a serious needle phobe and the thought of a needle near my spine makes me extremely uncomfortable. My question is, do I need it? I understand it s for post op pain, but is it just for the day of surgery that it helps? Can t they just give me extra pain meds when I wake up from surgery? Any info helps. Thank you!
