Is Nosebleed In A Toddler Post Cleft Palate Surgery A Concern?

My great granddaughter who is 2 1/2 yrs old was born with a cleft palate. She had surgery but I think the ENT still has to do something. We found out that she was suppose to have seen a dr. for follow up but the parents "blew" off about 7 appts. Tonite she had a nose bleed while sleeping. Is this anything to worry about

Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

As per your complain nosebleed can occur commonly due to injury to the inside of nose that can be probably injuring blood vessels. If it is not happened immediately after cleft palate repair then. Probably it is not due to the surgery or any left out procedure. If the bleeding stopped and there is no recurrent episode of bleeding or if the bleeding was not severe then there is nothing to worry about.

But you should still consult her treating ENT and get her evaluated so that he can look for any signs of infection or incomplete repair of the cleft for confirmation and if needed appropriate treatment can be done.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Honey Arora
