Is Omeprazole Recommended To Treat Acid Reflux After Undergoing Endoscopy?
My doctor has concluded after my endoscopy that I should treat my acid reflex with omeprazole 40 mg as needed. I may take it for only one day, if needed, and do not have to continue taking it for 14 days. Do you agree that it is okay to do this? Also, how long before eating should I take omeprazole? Thanks!
Hi. The answer to your question depends somewhat on what your doctor saw during endoscopy. However taking Omeprazole to treat acid reflux to very reasonable, and if your doctor told you to take it then I would recommend following their advice.
That being said, the best way to take Omeprazole is in the morning on an empty stomach, ~30-60 minutes before you eat. You should also take it every day for the trial period. It is not typically used on an "as needed" basis, unlike other antacid medications like Famotidine, Ranitidine, or Tums.
