Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi, my child will be born with one kidney. I heard that a child can recieve an adult kidney at 2 years old. I was wondering if my child already has 1 good kidney, is it possible for me to give him one of mine so he has 2 good kidneys. I understand they can live long healthy lives with only 1, but I would feel better if he had 2 for safety reasons.... thank you

Is One Kidney Sufficient For Survival?
Hi, Kidney s main functional unit is nephrons. Each kidney has 1.25 million nephrons which filters blood to make urine. If you have one kidney then nephrons remains same but it s filter capacity increases and it may not lead to any serious problem. Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further. Regards, Dr. Bhadresh Lakhani
