Is Parathyroidectomy Indicated By Parathyroid Hormone Elevation?
Hi Dr. Andrew, I am 52 years old male had suffer esrf and was on regular Hemodialysis for 5 years. For the past 1 year my parathyroid hormone was elevated up to 800pmol/l and my calcium and po4 was under control. To prevent further damage to my bone, my doctor was advised to do parathyroidectomy? Before that, i also like to hear your generous advise. Thank you
I have gone through your query and can understand your concern...
Yes parathyroidectomy is indicated in severe elevation of parathyroid hormone. This procedure is used to remove tumors or hyperplasia of the parathyroid glands, when they produce excessive parathyroid hormone. Normally all four parathyroid glands are not removed. One or two parathyroid glands which appear normal are left for some parathyroid hormone production in future. Severe elevation of parathyroid hormone can cause osteoporosis( bone weakening) , kidney stone, muscle degeneration & many other problems. hence parathyroidectomy is advised in you.
