Is Persistent Cough A Symptom Of Allergic Cold?

I have had a persistent cough that has lasted since my last cold earlier this fall. I do have allergies and have struggled with them also so I thought that that perhaps this cough was related to them. The fall is typically my worst time as is the onset of winter with dust. My cough is dry at times with a dry tickle and other times I cough I feel like I am coughing up some phlegm---- like I am clearing my chest/ throat. My cold was sinus and then chest related initially. I thought that I got over it, but this has hung on. It is worse at night and when I lay down and my chest feels heavy. I have had restless sleep with coughing and feeling gunky. My husband suggested that I use his inhaler from when he was sick. Due to struggling I reluctantly gave in and it did help. Do I need to see my primary doctor? Is this just a cold/ allergies hanging on?

Please advise.

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concern.

As per your complain persisting cough is commonly seen with dust allergies and can gradually lead to allergic sinusitis, Bronchitis or Asthma..
I would suggest you to consult an Allergist and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation can help in diagnosis and can also advise you investigations like allergic testing like RAST test, Patch test, chest x-ray,PNS view of sinuses etc..
Treatment will be advised as per the confirmation of the cause..
As of now you can take anti allergics like Benadryl or Allegra, steroid nasal sprays, decongestants like Pseudoephadrine, steam inhalations etc..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
