Is Persistent Sneezing And Constant Blowing Of Nose Due To Swimming?
Hi, for 2 nights this week I have woken at 3am and 5am constantly sneezing. It lasts for the best part of an hour. It feels like a full blown cold; however i’m constantly blowing my nose from when the sneezing starts until after mid day. But no other symptoms of a cold. It started earlier hours on Sunday morning. So it’s all new. Any suggestions? Would it help if I told you that I swim. I swim Sunday and Tuesday. Coincidentally the episodes of sneezing started in the early hours after the swimming nights.
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Yes, swimming can cause irritation and inflammation in nose which is known as rhinitis. And this causes sneezing and blowing of nose. So better to consult ENT doctor and get done clinical examination and endoscopic examination of nasal cavity. You will need intranasal spray containing azelastin and oral levocetrizine (antihistamine). Also do warm water gargles and steam inhalation 4-5 times a day. Drink plenty of fluids orally and keep yourself hydrated. If you can it is advisable to stop swimming for 2-3 weeks.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
