Is Physiotherapy Advisable For Degenerative Arthritis In The Shoulder?
My husband is 87 and has moderate/severe ALZ . He has degenerative arthritis in his right shoulder and now he is scheduled for PT. They said they will start with 2# weights to help him gain some range of motion. I am afraid this will make the pain worse. He has to use a walker to get around. Does this sound like the right treatment?
Physiotherapy is advised in degenerative disease of the shoulder. At 87 the program which is advised is different than the normal people. Start with therapeutic ultrasound therapy and TENS therapy to help reduce pain and inflammation.
Post 5 sessions if the pain is less then start with static biceps, static triceps and static deltoid within the physiological pain of the patient. Once the sufficient muscle activation is done, start with gravity eliminated ROM (Range of Motion) exercises.
And continue the static exercise for gaining more strength. Slowly progress to gravity eliminated ROM exercises. The exercise at 87 should go slow and low intensity.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
