Is Platelet Level Of 89 A Cause For Concern?

I have a platelet level of 89 and a couple of days ago my eyes were suddenly sensitive to light and the white part of my left eye was very red. My optometrist is booked for the next 2 weeks and is not available to examine my eye. Is this a serious problem? Why is my eye red? Could it be bleeding problem?

Hello,

Welcome to Health Care Magic. I read carefully your query and I understand your concern.

The normal range for platelet count 150–350 x 10 3 /μL . With such presentations in my clinic, I would first rule out serious conditions that may be causative of this low platelet count, or differently called thrombocytopenia.
The red colour of your eyes may be due to an infection or because of your platelet count.
Meanwhile, I would suggest you to visit your local haematologist, in order to diagnose the ethology of your thrombocytopenia, because it is concerning. As you already may know platelets stop bleeding by clumping and forming plugs in blood vessel injuries. Thrombocytopenia often occurs as a result of a separate disorder, such as leukemia or an immune system problem.
Thrombocytopenia signs and symptoms may include: Easy or excessive bruising (purpura), Superficial bleeding into the skin that appears as a rash of pinpoint-sized reddish-purple spots (petechiae), usually on the lower legs, Prolonged bleeding from cuts, Bleeding from your gums or nose etc.

Hope I answered to your question. For further concerns feel free to ask.

Take Care,
Dr. Ina Zaimi
