Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I had a colonoscopy yesterday they found a 3 cm polyp in my descending colon and removed. Doctor said he is not sure if the whole part of ot is removed. He said it did not looked very bad however was very large. My question is that what would be my change to not going under a surgery and could a polyp in that size not be cancerous? Thank you.
First of all, I want to let you know that the polyps in colon are because of multiple reasons. Some may be because of infection or constipation, some because of inflammation and some may be because of cancer. The kind of polyp you are specifying seems to be a pedunculated polyp which may be because of constipation. It is having a body attached to the wall of the colon by a stalk.
Then, there is another presentation of that whether the polyp is single or multiple. If single polyp is there chances of cancer is very rare where as multiple polyps does have some malignant potential. All you have to do is wait for the report of the biopsy specimen of the polyp. Second, you should be having some dietary modification like increase water intake, more amount of fruits and vegetables and roughage in the food, and for some days a laxative like liquid paraffin or lactulose.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Manish Kumar Gupta, General Surgeon
