Is Pregnancy Possible After A Tubal Ligation?

I had a tubal ligation 4 years ago. The last three months my periods have been irregular and I bleed every time I have sex. I took three pregnancy test the first positive the other two negative. I have had nausea and heart burn the last month. I also look like I am about 5 months along. Is it possible to be pregnant even with two negative test?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

If the tubes have been cut and ligated properly, the chances of getting pregnant is not possible.

However, if the procedure is not done properly, the tubes can recanalise and can increase the possibility of becoming pregnant.

Bleeding after intercourse could be due to presence of inflammation in cervix (cervicitis) or due to presence of uterine polyps.

Since pregnancy test is ambiguous, it would be advisable to undertake trans-vaginal ultrasound scan and consult Obstetrician with the report for clinical evaluation and appropriate management.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
