Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I m 38 yrs old and had a tubal ligation done 3 yrs ago after a csection with my son. My periods are pretty regular. My last period was in July. I m about 4 weeks late. I took an at home pregnancy test and was negative...is it possible I could still be pregnant?
It is unlikely that you are pregnant since tubal ligation tends to be a permanent procedure, the failure rate is very low though it can rarely occur.
Pregnancy tests detect the HCG hormone , this is detectable 11 to 14 days after conception so if the test was done after this time, then it is likely accurate.
The other causes of delayed periods are: (1) emotional stress or illness (2)abnormal levels of thyroid hormone (3)physical illness (4)high levels of a hormone called prolactin (5)side effect of medication (6)polycystic ovarian syndrome
To determine if one of these is present, it would require physical examination, blood tests and imaging (ultrasound)
I hope this helps
