Is Pregnancy Possible Despite Taking A Morning After Pill?

Hi, my name is Karen. During my past menstrual cycle I took two morning after pills. I was fertile when I took the first one and it was before 48hrs after sex. The second one was about more than a week later, about 12 hrs after sex but it was a 5day morning after pill. I m 12 days late now and I have tender breasts and light cramps, I took a blood pregnancy test and it came out positive. Now I know that everything indicates the I am in fact pregnant but a while back ago a similar thing happened to me where I took a 5day morning after pill and I was I think 2 or 3 weeks late, had a positive pregnancy test but few days after taking the test, I had my period which could ve been a miscarriage I really don t know. I ve only heard that morning after pills can really mess up you menstrual cycle. That s why I m confused, can I really be pregnant or could it be false alarm?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

The morning after pill may be effective in preventing pregnancy but not always, and the symptoms you said, with delayed periods, and a positive pregnancy test is pretty suggestive of true pregnancy. The earlier one might have been a missed abortion as you said.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
