Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Is Pregnancy Possible Despite Taking An Emergency Contraceptive Pill?
So I had not been on birth control and my boyfriend and I had sexual intercourse. The condum broke and I took the after pill about 4 hours after and that was about 26 hours ago. Could I start birth control now and would it be more effective to not get pregnant?
As you had taken the pill within 4 hours of intercourse, there is almost no chance of you getting pregnant.
Let me mention few facts about after pill: 1) When taken in 2) If within 24 hrs, it is 95% effective. So, you are on a very safer side
Regarding birth control pills, they can’t prevent pregnancy on instant basis but they need to be used consistently as prescribed. Moreover, they are not recommended for emergency or post coital contraception.
If you are going to have intercourse frequently, I would suggest you to go for oral contraceptive pills. But, as far as this coital act is concerned, after pill is enough to prevent pregnancy.
Still if you are doubtful, kindly go for urine pregnancy test after 3 weeks with a kit at home by yourself.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Pallavi.m
